About Md. Tarikul Islam

Co-Founder & Executive Director, Green Climate Initiative

Md. Tarikul Islam is a passionate environmental leader, climate advocate, and youth mobilizer dedicated to building a sustainable and climate-resilient Bangladesh. Born and raised in the climate-vulnerable coastal village of Bara Masua in Pirojpur, Tarikul grew up witnessing how cyclones, floods, and salinity intrusion continued to shape the lives of his community. These early experiences became the driving force behind his lifelong mission: empowering young people to lead climate solutions and creating meaningful change for vulnerable populations.

Tarikul holds a BSc (Hons.) in Environmental Science from Noakhali Science and Technology University, where he developed a strong foundation in environmental research, disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and sustainable development. As a researcher, he has contributed to multiple scientific publications focused on loss and damage, locally-led adaptation, and early warning systems in Bangladesh.

In 2023, he co-founded the Green Climate Initiative, a youth-based environmental organization that has grown into a dynamic platform with more than 1,650 active volunteers across Bangladesh. Under his leadership, GCI has organized over 20 major climate awareness and capacity-building programs, planted 20,000+ trees, and reached 50,000+ people nationwide through campaigns, workshops, and community-driven climate actions.

As Executive Director, Tarikul oversees GCI’s strategic vision, program development, partnerships, and research initiatives. He leads collaborations with national and international stakeholders and ensures the organization remains a powerful voice for climate justice, youth empowerment, and sustainable innovation. His leadership also facilitated new partnerships and strengthened project documentation, monitoring, and donor engagement.

Beyond GCI, Tarikul is the Founder & Managing Director of Envonex Limited, an environmental service company promoting sustainable solutions and environmental compliance for organizations.

With expertise in community engagement, climate adaptation, research, project coordination, and environmental advocacy, Tarikul remains committed to driving transformational change. His dream is clear:
to build a Bangladesh where young people lead the frontlines of climate action and every community is empowered to adapt, thrive, and protect the planet.
